Summer in Midwest

Summer in the Midwest

In the Midwest, warm weather rolling in means a retreat to the lake. To beat the heat and humidity, the thing to do is get out on the water. That means escapes like the iconic Grand Hotel on Michigan’s Mackinac Island. Nestled in a strait linking Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, the island is free of cars and the hotel, opened in 1887, has been a haven for summer fun for more than a century. Travelers on Tauck’s Michigan’s Lakes & Mackinac Island itinerary get the chance to stay at the Grand, complete with horse-drawn carriage ride to your accommodations.

Down at the other end of Lake Michigan, Chicago is the perfect city for summertime. A day on the lake makes the most of the great weather, especially when followed with a nice al fresco meal at one of Chicago’s myriad great restaurants. An architectural tour along the Chicago River is another excellent way to get on the water while getting some culture. The city boasts eight Virtuoso-preferred hotels.

Away from it all, Canoe Bay in Wisconsin, a couple hours outside Minneapolis, is a Relais & Chateaux lake escape with great food and wine, spacious cottages and lush gardens and trails. Canoeing, kayaking and fishing show off the best of what the lake has to offer.

In Missouri, most flock to Lake of the Ozarks, missing out on the hidden gem of Stonewater Cove on Table Rock Lake. All-inclusive packages include three meals a day activities such as water skiing, tubing and use of kayaks and canoes on water, plus ziplining and ATV rides through the extensive trails on property in Mark Twain National Forest. There’s also mini golf and bocce ball on the grounds and a media room in the main lodge. A sunset cruise is the perfect ending to a perfect day.

For rolling on the rivers of the Midwest, the American Queen Steamboat Company intends to resume itineraries on the Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio rivers in mid- to late August.
